Founded & curated by Sanele Xaba · Chapter One
Three stages. One sound.
Subtropic is a two-day festival celebrating the origins, movement and evolution of house music. Chapter One is being developed for Summer 2026/27.
The festival
House is the language. Black creativity is the centre.
Rooted in Black creativity, it connects house music’s foundations with the global scenes, cultures and communities that have carried, reinterpreted and continued to evolve the genre. Launching in Cape Town, South Africa, Subtropic is conceived as an international festival platform rather than a festival defined by one city.
The African diaspora and the global movement of house music are central to this connection between roots, scenes and communities.
Origins, Crossings and Ubuntu are not rigid genre boxes. Each stage carries a different energy within the same festival world.
Origins
Joyful. Expressive. Celebratory.
A space that draws from the roots and lineage of house while keeping the energy open, warm and alive.
Crossings
Movement between cities and scenes.
A meeting point for artists, sounds and influences that travel across geography, generation and creative communities.
Ubuntu
The local pulse.
A stage grounded in South African energy, community and the sounds shaping the present moment.
